the Arts Centre and Spiegeltent International present
The Arts Centre Forecourt, 100 St Kilda Rd, Melbourne Fine Blue ThreadWednesday November 12, 7pm Tickets $30 With delicate, haunting vocals, rich strings and fluid tabla grooves Fine Blue Thread is a new collaboration of three well known Melbourne musicians with backgrounds in Indian, Indonesian and Western music combining to create music "as fresh as it is beguiling" (the age 2007). Ria Soemardjo (voice and gut sting-viola) is a rising star on the Australian world music scene. Born in Melbourne of Australian/Indonesian descent, Ria draws on her deep respect for the Javanese musical tradition in her song writing and collaborative projects. With her voice an exquisite instrument Ria integrates her vocal study in Indonesia and India with western influences and gorgeous English lyrics to create a truly unique vocal style. 'Cellist Helen Mountfort is well known to Spiegeltent audiences for her performances with My Friend the Chocolate Cake and with Fine Blue Thread performs on a 1760 gut string 'cello with a haunting and dusky sound. Sam Evans teaches tabla at Monash University and over the last decade has evenly divided his time between Australia and India performing concerts as soloist and accompanist in both traditional and modern music. Fine Blue Thread performed sold out Spiegeltent as part of the 2007 Melbourne International Arts festival and is fast gathering a reputation for creating spell binding live performances. Fine Blue Thread is currently recording a first album with assistance from Arts Victoria.
The Spiegeltent Melbourne concert program will be available October 2008.
