The Arts Centre Forecourt, 100 St Kilda Rd, Melbourne Ali McGregor in "Jazz Cigarette"Sunday 16th November 2008 at 7pm Tickets $30 Creator of the Opera Burlesque and La Clique soprano Ali McGregor sings renditions of her favourite sassy jazz classics and timeless trashy pop songs. Accompanied by a trio of Melbourne’s rising jazz star Ben Winkelman on piano, Sam Anning on Bass and Ben Hendry on drums, these lazy, sultry songs will ease you into the summer evening. Singing the songs that inspired her to sing in the first place, Ali explores the sassy classics made famous by some of her heroines like Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holliday, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Annie Lennox and Britney Spears. Ali McGregor, a principal soprano at Opera Australia for over 5 years, has made her name adding her classical experience to her flair for original interpretations of rock, pop and jazz standards. Shows include: ‘The Opera Burlesque’ performing to sell-out crowds in Adelaide and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals and Melbourne Comedy Festival; ‘Midnight Lullabies’ has also played at Adelaide and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals and The Malthouse Theatre’s Cabaret; ‘Ali McGregor’s Late-Nite Variety-Nite Night’ continues to entice at Melbourne Comedy and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals; ‘The Convict’s Opera’ for Sydney Theatre Company in Oct ’08 (touring the UK early in 2009); and regular appearances on ABC’s Spicks and Specks.
